Vatican stone, aka Frosterley Marble, is not marble at all, but a black limestone with the fossilized remains of Stags Horn Coral, Ammonite, and/or Crinoids clearly and attractively visible. Frosterley Marble has been taken from the Rogerley Quarry for more than 700 years and has been used as a building stone for high status buildings such as Bishop Auckland Castle, the Chapel of Nine Altars in Durham Cathedral, as well as in buildings in the Vatican. The Rogerley Quarry closed in 2016, therefore this is a rare and increasingly difficult stone to find.
Metaphysically, Vatican Stones are associated with the third eye and root chakra, and are known to promote patience, lift us up when we are feeling down and to rise above naysayers.
